Fire Risk Assessments
In October 2006, the Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order 2005 came into effect and replaced all other fire legislation in England and Wales. It brought about an end to Fire Certificates and the need for a fire risk assessment to be carried out in all non domestic premises.
Under article 9 of the order the "responsible person" is the employer, occupier or owner in the workplace and he or she must ensure the safety of relevant persons in respect of fire safety. One of the main duties of the "responsible person" is to conduct a fire risk assessment of the premises from which they operate to record any significant findings and take the required actions to ensure compliance.
The fire risk assessment itself is designed to identify the risks of a fire on the premises and to take all reasonable steps to reduce or remove the risks. This is done by using specialist knowledge to ensure the premises complies with all current legislation and that all fire safety systems and elements of structural fire safety are as they should be.
Documentation is available to assist in the completion of a fire risk assessment however the "responsible person" can nominate a competant person to carry out the fire risk assessment on their behalf if they wish.
